So the topic of the week is:
Why is web design important to my design career?
First off let me start by saying I find HTML quite scary, its extremely complicated and it seems like if you mess up just one little thing you’re in trouble, but I hope that by taking this class most of my fears will disappear.
Well being that my career is in graphic design it may seem like web design is not that important… but I’ve heard from several people that are currently working as graphic designers who say that having your own website is essential just for many employers to consider you for a job. Having your own website certainly makes you look more professional, and it also is a great way for you to showcase your portfolio. I think that the graphic designers that have their own websites will have a leg-up on the competition.

Hey,
Yeah, I do agree that an error in a tag or whatever would mess up a whole page design, and then you’ve got to skim through and find your mistake.
Hopefully learning how to use Dreamweaver will help us find those errors and learn how to watch for them.
Oh yeah, and graphic designers who have a website do have an advantage over someone who doesn’t, but I think it’s like that in every field – brand name clothing stores, shoes, etc.

True dat!
Seems like you can’t be taken serious as a designer these days if you don’t have a web page. My degree is in digital media production (film and video) so I can definitely see how important it is for me to have a well designed site to show videos on. I hope this class helps me in the design aspect of site building. I don’t have much design experience. I’m sure you GDers will churn out some cool shiite though. I just hope I can keep up.
Peace!

I was also hesistant about learning HTML and web design…but at least we are gonna use dreamweaver…which should be awesome! I know a few freelance graphic designers who pretty much make a living off of web design. I think it is essential for us graphic designers to know such a skill to survive!

I’ve always been terrified of HTML. You could say I’m HTMLophobic, but thankfully we are learning Dreamweaver. And it is an important tool to learn in the graphic design field, it will give you a leg up on the competition (ie, other HTMLophobics).

Justin,
I agree with what you’ve said in essence. However, I do question the science behind it. How would web design assist you in your career. You can go pay the average student a couple of bucks to create a website for you to upload your work, you could even pay a fee to a one of the websites to maintain a website. If I did that, there would be no difference between you and I except that I have more time to work on my projects while you’re busy creating a webpage. Just my thoughts.
